It’s been a very slow and poor start
to our 2022 season of guest speakers
and meetings. Our last three meeting; February. March and April have been
very poorly attended in comparison with our pre-Covid meetings. This was very disappointing considering that two of our speakers John Smiles and David Thornton had both traveled considerable distances to be with us, also notwithstanding
the time and effort our Secretary Geoff Butterworth commits to sourcing and organizing the speakers and meetings.
Anyway, onwards and upwards; plans
for our annual D.A. Show on Sunday
11th September are well underway and nearing completion. If anyone wants further information or a show schedule, contact details for NEDDA members can be found in the NVS Directory.
With plants being grown and donated by D.A. members, our annual plant sale that’s almost entirely facilitated by John Croot and John Goodall is going very well to press. Pictured is me getting together a selection of plants to load up for carting off to either of the John’s to replenish their sales stock.
On Wednesday 10th August, the holder of numerous world records, Mr.
Joe Atherton as kindly invited us into his labyrinth and mystical world of Giant Vegetable growing, as always this will be well attended and enjoyable visit to Joe’s.
Our monthly meetings continue to be held on the third Wednesday of the month unless otherwise stated at Pleasley Miners Welfare NG19 7PD.

 Westmorland & North Lancashire DA
Hi everyone. As I write this article our season of Winter talks has come to an end so thank you to our speakers, Pete High, Julian Davies and John Soulsby for their excellent talks.
We are looking forward to starting again in October and will publish our programme of talks in future editions of Simply Vegetables, the NVS website and on our Westmorland & North Lancs DA Facebook page. Although we are not holding our coffee morning/plant sale this year I’m still growing a few vegetable plants for regular customers. The compost I usually use for this was a Which? best buy a few years ago and worked very well but has now been discontinued. This year I’m using compost from a well-known supermarket. This compost is quite light and contains wood fibres. Not good for small seeds and can’t be sieved but courgette, cucumber and zinnias germinated well and look healthy as do tomatoes and assorted brassicas pricked out into it. It is necessary to check carefully before watering as the surface can be quite dry but the compost moist underneath.
Our meetings are held at the Club Inn, Main St. Endmoor, Kendal, Cumbria LA8 0EU. on the third Thursday of each month October through ‘til April. Further details; Jim Robinson 015395 61053 jim. robinson45@hotmail.co.uk
