Ex TRANSGLOBE 2016
Maj Laura (Dolly) McKay
Ex TRANSGLOBE is a Tri-Service Sailing expedition that takes place every 5 years and involves sailing a pair of yachts around the world in 12 months. One yacht is sailed by a crew of Army and the other yacht is shared between Royal Navy and RAF crews (purely friendly competition
there then). To reduce the risk of service personnel going ‘native’ living on a
boat for 12 months and allow maximum participants to get involved, the trip is split up into 12 legs and for the Army boat, each leg is crewed by a different Corps. For Ex TRANSGLOBE 2016 we
had two ‘Challenge 72’ yachts which were newly refurbished and Ocean ready! I was lucky enough to get a place on the AMS leg 10: The Caribbean leg(!) with fellow RADC crew member LCpl Nikki Kelly
and 14 other AMS Soldiers and Of cers (so we certainly weren’t short of a Ship’s Surgeon).
It is at this point that I would like to apologise on behalf of myself and LCpl Kelly for being so jammy, and recommend to anyone interested in future TRANSGLOBE expeditions that when the calling notice comes out 24 months in advance, your boss is probably not going to say ‘no’ as he/she probably won’t still be your boss by the time the Ex comes around so just APPLY!! Being a rm believer in the phrase ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ I will aim to give you a brief run-down our adventures and let the photos of white sandy beaches do the talking...
