   mountains in this notoriously flat country). We entered a local rugby competition and beat the Estonian national B-team with our heavily-Fijian side. We sent out vehicles and soldiers to schools to do some defence engagement and entered a tough mudder which we lost to a local group of teenagers (in our defence, it was very muddy, and they had a head start).
Most valiant effort of the month has to go to Pte Clark, the chef, who was scrolling his phone in bed when Lt Rand came bursting in at 9pm, saying that a 4SCOTS soldier wasn’t on the coach, which was leaving now, taking competitors to a late- night half marathon, and would Pte Clark mind finding some shoes, jumping in and running for two hours? “No worries Sir!” he grinned, and jumped onto the coach like the hero he is.
At the end of it all, we ventured into Tallinn and explored the ancient capital. It was beautiful, and the (two) beers were well- earned. It had been – genuinely – the best exercise many of us had been on, a chance to prove light cavalry’s value as formation reconnaissance for an actual brigade, fighting a free-flowing enemy in realistic terrain. Though it was time to go home, we were almost sad to say goodbye to Estonia – until the RAF screwed up and our flights were delayed again. Obviously.
