on and over the years other people have come along and joined the band and helped out with the teaching. The greatest reward is when you see these young people make it to the top, not with our band but move onto higher sections, even the very top. When you hear a parent say “I never thought my girl would make a player and now look at her” – that’s what has made it all worthwhile.
At this time I was still combining the conductor’s job and the secretary’s job but by 1988 I had to give up the secretary’s job to concentrate on my own small business.
In 2007 the local Rotary Club decided to try and do something special for me and approached whoever it is who decides these things at Buckingham Palace. It took and long time and quite a few people had to be in on the secret but I didn’t have to know.
A Mr Palmer took on the job of collecting all the information, my son Stephen, his wife Andrea and my wife were all in. People were tracked down and asked if they would write something about what I had done for them or the organisation they represented. I have since been able to read the letters.
In May 2008 I received a letter asking me if I was prepared to accept the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
So here we are sixty-five years after joining the band but time is running and
the eyesight is going, the hearing is going but some of the people in the band are determined to keep me going for as long as possible.
Finally, nothing like this could have been possible without the backing and support of my wife Doreen, my son Stephen who had to miss out on quite a bit if Dad had got a band job.
There is such a lot more I could tell you.
I will let my wife have the last word. She said when the citation was read out when I collected my M.B.E. from the Queen – “that citation should read ‘He can’t say no!’”.
