Autumn Sown Veg
August is a time when many of us are harvesting more than we can eat from our plots, but if you would like a productive plot over the winter months then now
is the time to start sowing some winter hardy vegetables.
If you have a polytunnel, the range of things that you can keep growing over winter widens further, but make sure that it is clean so that you make the most of the available light. Kale Nero do Toscana, sown in a polytunnel, will give you tender baby leaves and the winter lettuces can be sown right up to mid-November.
The shortening days after mid-summer reduce the risk of bolting for the now popular oriental greens, which can stand a
degree of frost and may give you crops until early spring. Young leaves from spinach sown in September can be used in winter salads along with the oriental greens and mustards. Also, in August you can still
grow green manures such as buckwheat, Crimson Clover, and Fenugreek.
Crops you can sow in August and September are:
August
• Spring greens, such as F1 Spring Hero, F1 Duncan, April, Flower of Spring, Durham Early and Wheelers Imperial
• Carrot F1 Eskimo • Claytonia
• Beet Perpetual Spinach • Salad Rocket
• Spinach Medina
