Visitors to the National Garden Scheme Open Weekend at Beaumaris Allotments on 7th/8th July will have had the opportunity to taste some of the results of all the hard work by allotment holders. Keevan Anker showed visitors his ‘Mini Vineyard’ and handed out samples of his recent vintages.
Chairman Andrew Dixon stresses that “Allotments are for everyone. We have
all ages on the plots from young children (including the 1st Beaumaris Beavers)
to more mature adults! One of the many benefits of Growing your Own is that,
in addition to getting beneficial exercise and making friends, you can try some
of the more unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables, all picked fresh. For instance,
have you ever eaten a ‘Turks Turban’ or
a ‘Trombolino’ (an autumn delight and delicious in any recipe where you would use butternut squash)? If you fancy trying ‘Hugh’s Famous Spicy Soup’ just see our website for the recipe.”
Or what about the Callaloo (Jamaican Spinach), or Rainbow Sweet Inca (Sweetcorn), or Emperor of Russia (Dwarf French beans)? These are just some of the plants which were on show growing over the weekend.
At the end of the year, plotholders
get to celebrate their hard work at the BAAFTAS (Beaumaris Annual Awards
for The Allotments) and sample delicious jams, chutneys and pickles at their Annual Allotfest.
And if you don’t just fancy growing fruit and vegetables, why not have your own ‘Cutting Garden’ where you can pick buckets of beautiful flowers every week? Two Cutting Gardens were open to visitors.
Experienced plotholders were on hand throughout the weekend of 7th and 8th July to give advice, and visitors were able to see for themselves just how wonderful Beaumaris Allotments are.
