The Regimental Journal of The Light Dragoons
who is relishing the challenge of running a Squadron.
SSgt Cheshire breathed a sigh of relief handing the Squadron over to the on-coming SSM and not having to do both the SSM role and oversee Sgt Thurtle as the stand in SQMS. His work over this period is to be commended!
A summer treat saw the Regiment deploy to Sennelager for an exercise in the virtual world utilising the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer. A perhaps less testing exercise than Estonia, the Empire battled mostly with IT issues and when it worked with some very effective computer- generated enemy. After a week of training Capt Jefferies stepped up to command with Lt Griffiths as his 2IC while Maj Mackey, Sgt Sudlow and LCpl Thompson went off for some demanding AT in the Swiss Alps. In a very competitive inter-Squadron battle, Capt Jefferis defeated our virtual enemy taking home the victory for the inter Squadron ADVANCE to CLEAR. The Empire were not only tactically victo-
rious, but the footballers also won the Inter-squadron football.
With a highly trained and qualified Sqn, we saw some of the great names of the Empire being loaned to C Sqn for Op PSYMA and the workforce numbers dwindle. As ever the Empire took this in their stride and before long the Sqn was away on another overseas exercise with Lt Lennon. Third
Troop deployed to Kenya on Ex HARAKA STORM alongside the Grenadier Guards proving the Lt Cav can exercise on the training areas. However, the demands of the training were nothing compared to the demands of the weather. Trying to move stealthily over sodden clay-type mud in the rainy-season pushed them and their wagons to the limit.
