and delivering the exercise while delivering on numerous other commitments, it nonetheless provided a valuable opportunity to refresh everyone’s basic soldiering skills.
The Battery was also the lead for planning and delivering the Regimental Leadership Week, which occurred immediately after Ex CYPHER SHARPEN. The week included a day long patrols competition with 10 stands designed to test people’s knowledge and expertise on a number of essential military skills. Among the stands were: a navigation exercise focussing on precise naviga- tion by contour only, a really enjoyable section attack stand which put everyone’s infantry skills to the test, plus stands that tested people on battlefield first aid, gunnery knowledge, armoured vehicle recognition, and communications equipment. Separately to the patrols competition there were external speakers from the Metropolitan Police, Mark Ormerod (Royal Marines Veteran), an afternoon of debating, team planning exercises and a sports competition. The junior soldiers also got to visit the Royal Artillery Export Support Team, where they saw some of the equipment the army is trialling, learned about some of the challenges and complexities of defence procurement and exports, and presented back on their favourite piece of equipment.
In July a number of soldiers from the Battery enjoyed the chance to conduct some adventurous training. Twenty people deployed on Ex BAVARIAN CYPHER, where they conducted a multi activ-
ity package of rock climbing, kayaking, hill walking, and Kletter- steig in the beautiful setting of the Bavarian Alps. The two-week package was an amazing experience for everyone involved and, although some people’s fear of heights was certainly tested, it was a thoroughly enjoyable two weeks. Separately to this, other members of the Battery conducted AT activities in Wales includ- ing caving, mountain biking, and hill walking. With the adventur- ous training complete, the Battery conducted a short sprint to close down for a well-earned summer leave over August.
Returning from summer leave the Battery went straight into prep- aration for Ex SCORPION CYCLONE, a 1st DRS BCT exercise on SPTA. Having been without our Colours for a number of months, it was good to get our hands back on the guns. With the opportu- nity to live fire and the challenge of a live ‘enemy’ deploying UAS to hunt for the gun positions – it promises to be a valuable and demanding training exercise.
While another busy year for the Battery may be reaching its con- clusion the pace of activities certainly isn’t letting up any time soon. The Battery now looks forward to starting its Mission Ready Training for Op CABRIT 14, first with mounted GPMG ranges in Castlemartin, followed by the Tac Group and elements of the CPs deploying on Ex IRON CYCLONE and Ex CABRIT TEMPEST in Germany. In March 2024 the Tac Group will deploy to Estonia with the Gun Group following on in June.
