but in fact I had a problem with technical issues in the database which may have been corrupted during my checking in the days before the show. Which meant that I had to resort to pen and paper and some manual calculations to complete the day’s work.
The prize money is paid electronically by Northern Branch Treasurer David Allison, which is far easier than having to write dozens of cheques. This year David had his work cut out.
In total 80 people entered the National Championships 2023 with a total of 409 individual entries. 76 people actually benched with 258 entries, all within the expectations of previous few years. It’s a bit of a science when trying to sort bench space when setting up because although we expect not everything will be benched, there’s always the possibility that a 100% of those entered will bench.
A couple of points worthy of note. As a trial this year there was an extra section (Section 27) a collection of 4 kinds of vegetables 15 points or under, and 3 of each kind, the idea was to try and attract entries from growers that don’t grow the higher pointed perhaps more difficult to grow vegetables, and there were some interesting and unusual vegetables benched so was quite a sight to see, and certainly challenged the knowledge of the judges..23 people entered and 20 benched so it did attract a good level of entries but those in the prizes appear regularly in the prizes. So, I believe there will need to be a little tweaking to ensure it properly achieves its aims.
Secondly this year’s DT Brown sponsored class (26) was ‘Falco Turnip’ whilst there was some variation in the presentation
of the entries in this class, what a lovely colourful sight these turnips made on the bench, the purple, white and green was a photographer’s dream.
As far as I am aware there has been no negative comments regarding the judging which is testament to the brilliant job done by the Judges on the day. Events like this would be unlikely to happen without the Judges, Stewards and all those I’ve mentioned from the Northern Branch, and thanks to the exhibitors without your dedication in growing such fantastic produce there would be nothing to show.
