Chairs Report
What an odd season we’ve had. I don’t think I can ever remember another like it. Straight after planting we had 6 weeks without rain, and for a high rainfall area like we have, it was exceptional.
My potatoes are grown in the ground
for the kitchen, and this is only the second time in 63 years that I’ve had to water them, in fact I watered them twice. Winston and Armour have had lots of splits in the tubers, so in fact I should have watered sooner. Four sowings of cauliflowers all headed together, the first sowing was big, the last was very small. These I did water from
the outset. Once the weather broke, we had nothing but rain from mid-July till the end of August. In early September we had five days of almost 40c. It’s been a trying season to say the least.
Our branch show was held at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans, nr Cardiff on 9th and 10th September. It
was a great show well supported by our branch members and our friends from England and Scotland. We had Raymond Higgins judging from Ireland, so it was an international show.
The premier class for a collection of
five kinds was won by Jim Thompson. A great achievement having spent quite a long time in hospital not too long ago. The Potato championship was won by Sherie Plumb in a closely contested class with Owain Roberts in second place. However, Owain won the Leek championship with some of the best Welsh Seedling that I’ve seen in many years. David Thomas won the tap root championship, and I won the onion championship.
Our AGM will be held at the Lamb & Flag, Rhyader, on Sat 6th March 2024 , at 11am
