In the past year I have had the opportunity to get involved with the AMS Women’s Rugby team. Coming from an absolute novice, the team welcomed me with open arms. Last year they started a ‘zero to hero’ training week programme, which unfortunately I couldn’t attend due to posting.
However, I turned up at the start of the season and the women there took me under their wings. Although it was intense training
I enjoyed every minute of it. The coaches were very understanding to the fact that
I knew next to nothing about playing the game and managed to have me playing the game within a couple of training sessions. I started the season as a back, playing one
of the centres. By my second game I was
shuffled around and I now fit comfortably with the forwards as a second row.
Last season was a bit of a shame in the sense that we missed out by a slim margin on competing in the final. This was not due to loss but due to matches being cancelled last minute. This being the case it has just reinforced our ambitions for this year. I have recently taken part in this year’s ‘zero to hero’ training week and had a blast!
We had quite a few footballers come over to the dark side and it definitely meant I
had to pick up my game - little speedsters. Last season I was the only RADC member to take part, luckily I now have one more to keep me company!
Hopefully this season will be just as fun as last. I have high hopes.
