foes who had fought so ercely and suffered such losses on the feature during the War but who, after a chance meeting on Wagon Hill during individual centenary commemorations of the con ict, declared their eternal comradeship. This spirit was reaf rmed with the unveiling of a memorial in English and Afrikaans to both units for which The Ri es provided an honour guard. The memorial was unveiled by Major General Bryan Dutton CB CBE, formerly Colonel, The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, and Lieutenant Colonel Andries Jordaan, the last Commanding Of cer of the Harrismith Commando before its disbandment.
Our trip culminated with a day spent shark diving at Scottburgh, an hour to the south of Durban. Rather than stepping into a cage, we simply lowered ourselves into the open sea as a range of sharks swam around us. Later that evening Captain Swindells enjoyed the hospitality of Colonel Derek Moe, formerly the Commanding Of cer of The Durban Light Infantry, at the Durban Club, where again the desire to maintain the existing connections between our two units was af rmed.
The two weeks in South Africa were a fantastic opportunity for Ri emen to experience the depth of the connection that the Regiment has with South Africa through the exploits of our antecedent forbearers as well as the strong bonds that continue to exist between The Ri es and our allied Regiments.
