6 EAGLE AND CARBINE
place in the Army 2020 structures. For in the com- ing year we must rebase to Leuchars (and close down our barracks in Germany), convert to Light Cavalry and integrate fully with the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry. In the Magazine Section, you will be able to read more about the latter two activities, but key to both is that the paint is far from dry regarding how we will operate in the future. We may not have a blank canvas, but we are in the fortunate position of being able to learn and adapt as we train, drawing from the experiences of other Light Cavalry Regiments as well as the wider Army’s evolving understanding of our commitments to contingency, defence engagement overseas and resilience at home.
This Eagle and Carbine, therefore, marks a watershed in the recent history of the Regiment. On the one
hand, it records our final deployment in this 14 year long episode of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. On the other, it depicts how we might operate in the future as a Light Cavalry Regiment, one with the Yeomanry as Scotland’s Cavalry. There are also, in addition to reports of professional, social and sport- ing life, a broad range of fascinating articles taking us from the North Pole to Kuwait, from Catterick to Her Majesty’s Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms. Finally, after producing three volumes of the Eagle and Carbine, the Editor departs regimental duty with our thanks for another excellent edition.
