1224 LEARN ABOUT OBSERVING THE EARTH FROM SPACE
By Flight Sergeant Sam White
In one of 1224 (Wharfedale) Squadron's first Virtual Parade Nights of 2021, our very own Flight Sergeant Dr Scott Watson led a session on Observing the Earth from Space.
In the session, FS Watson, who deals with satellite data on a regular basis through his work at the University of Leeds, talked about a variety of subjects including different applications of satellites and how the cadets themselves could access satellite data using tools such as Google Earth and the European Space Agency's Sentinel Hub.
FS Watson also covered how the Royal Air Force's role in space is evolving and how satellite data can be used to track things like China's expansion of islands in the South China Sea.
The session was informative and should help the cadets as they start a Bronze Space Course in the coming months.

Briefing from 58 (Harrogate) Squadron
58 (Harrogate) Sqn has been undergoing a major refurbishment over the last 10 months (more
to come soon). Whilst undergoing a major clean-out of the rooms and stores, the cadets discovered a tremendous amount of historical memorabilia. This has now been taken on as a project within the squadron to go through and create a History of 58 Sqn cabinet, photographs, letters, awards and communications.
Additionally, just prior to the national lockdown cadets from the squadron undertook a new form of interview process for promotions to Corporal and Sergeants. The Cadets undertook a MMI – Multiple Mini Interviews. We had invited external staff including Sector Warrant Officer David Greenall, Cadet Warrant Officer Thomas Grieves
My goal for the next year is to make the NCO team as positive and supportive as can be
of 110 Sqn and Flight Lieutenant Adam Waudby. The cadets were interviewed by each on a specific areas such as Teamwork, Roleplay (Communica- tion), Knowledge of RAFAC/RAF, Decision Making – Situational, Data interpretation, Motivation and commitment to RAFAC and a drill test.
Subsequently 13 cadets in all were promoted – 7 to Cadet Corporal, 4 to Cadet Sergeants and 2 to Flt Sergeants. All these NCOs will be managed by our own Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, CWO Sara Silva, who said; "My goal for the next year is to make the NCO team as positive and supportive as can be. COVID restrictions can make times tough but together we can form a community that we look forward to contributing to and are proud to be part of."
