WALKING
 HOME FOR
CHRISTMAS
By SSI Darren Harvey and SI Tony Rayner
From the 1st to the 24th of December, members of the county were encouraged to participate in this year's fundraising campaign to support the veterans' charity, Walking With The Wounded. The walking activity could be undertaken within the rules of Covid-19 restrictions, so quickly became a popular project for many.
SSI Darren Harvey, Detachment Commander Waltham said; “As an adult instructor we feel it is important to set an example, so when the opportunity came to take part in the walking home for Christmas charity walk, we at Waltham detachment did not hesitate to take up the challenge. The cause is fantastic and the work they do is fully worthy of
our support. Our cadets and Adult Volunteers have enjoyed rising to the challenge and have been posting walks every day and sharing the donation link everywhere to raise as much awareness and money for the charity. I am deeply proud of the selfless commitment and dedication shown by all involved, especially in the unpresented times we find ourselves in.”
SI Tony Rayner, pictured, of Hornsea added: “Ever since being injured in service and having to learn to
walk again, I’ve always tried to live up to the Royal Engineer Association Motto “Service not self” and it’s good to remember there’s always someone worse off than yourself. I have been raising money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal since I was 13 collecting as a young Army Cadet, that’s 39 years. When this came up, I decided to challenge myself setting a goal of £100 and a distance of two miles. Some of my friends decided to rally around, two of whom decided to walk with me to make sure I was ok. Since I became an Adult Volunteer with all the encouragement from my ACF family I’ve found out you can achieve anything if you put the work in, so
off I went after padding my braces (which allow me to walk) to stop them rubbing. It was a great feeling when I reached my goal, the café on Hornsea sea front with a nice seat and a hot brew.”
The total raised was an outstanding £307.90!
Keeping the Flame Alive – A Company trialled their New Detachment Commanders Training
Over the weekend of 28/29 November 2020, a virtual Detachment Commanders Training Package was trialled by A Company. The training covered all elements of successfully commanding a detachment including Detachment Administration, Leadership, Managing Detachment accounts and Westminster training.
Now that the package has been successfully trialled, we are in a position to offer the course across the County. Initially this will remain a virtual course due to the uncertainty around the Corona virus and the need for planning, however eventually this will move to a blended learning offer and then back to face-to-face as we can.
The next course is due to be run in 2021 and we look forward to welcoming everyone.”– 2Lt Hollie Troughton
Following the success of the weekend we asked a couple of attending Adult
Volunteers what they thought of the delivered training.
AUO Nicky Boyce said “This weekend my staff and I took part in a pilot virtual DC training package put together by SSI Zara Thorpe and delivered by herself and 2Lt Troughton. I myself have been the DC of East Hull for over a year
now so I thought I knew everything but thanks to this weekend’s training I know a lot more and I’m more confident with how and what I’m doing in the office,
of course I didn’t have to attend but I’m so very happy I did. The course itself was run smoothly with plenty of time for questions and for the information to sink in. I personally cannot thank them enough for the time and effort put in to make our lives easier.”
When asking SSI Sharon North (Detachment Commander – Mona House), SSI North said “This weekend I attended the pilot of the DC Training
Package alongside other A Company Adult Volunteers. Even though the training Package was virtual it was delivered professionally with the Directing Staff being very knowledgea- ble in their subject area. The content of the course was varied with informative subjects provided for newer and older Adult Volunteers alike, from basic Westminster training to accounting and event management.
The addition of a presentation about leadership from Lt Colonel Fred Owen was very enlightening”
SSI North went on to say “I would recommend this training to all Adult Volunteers to get an insight to the successful running of a detachment regardless of rank or position. I would like to thank 2Lt Troughton, Lt Johnson and SSI Thorpe for their part in providing this course.
