to the performance and showed the many different levels of training. We were very grateful for all the hard work that had gone into the performance and the effort that had gone into the organisation.
Just before lunch we had a spare half an hour and David decided it would be nice to show us the Veil waterfall. After a 15-minute drive through the meandering forestry track in the Szalajka Valley, passing the late Prince Philips (Duke of Edinburgh) lodging, the lodge he would use whilst competing in carriage driving here in 1984. We arrived and we weren’t disappointed. There is something about flowing water that calms the soul and this was certainly no exception.
Our final journey took us to János Lóska’s Kisbéri Stud which is a renowned horse breeding facility located in Kisbér, Hungary. The stud was established by János Lóska, a prominent figure in Hungarian horse breeding, with a focus on preserving and promoting the Kisbéri breed. The Kisbéri horse is a Hungarian half-blood breed known for its versatility, strength, and endurance. The Kisbéri Stud is dedicated to breeding high-quality Kisbéri horses, adhering to strict breeding standards and selecting horses with exceptional traits. Their aim is to maintain the breed’s characteristics, which include a noble appearance, athleticism, and a willing temperament.
János Lóska’s Kisbéri Stud plays
a crucial role in the preservation
and development of the Kisbéri breed, contributing to its recognition
and success both nationally and internationally. Here they showed
us the breeding stallions that they produced to compete in show jumping, dressage and eventing; some of which were up to three
stars, a significant achievement and a credit to the workforce. We had
the pleasure of witnessing the head rider schooling a six-year-old stallion in all paces, it was a real spectacle and a delight to watch such quality horsemanship. This further solidified the opinion that the horses of this stud could be successfully utilised
in the British military and notable potential as DATR Riders.
A brief conversation on cost was
of course necessary during the visit, an while individual prices were not discussed and the obvious mention of increasing demand and spirally costs. The AHPC felt reassured that we could hopefully find the required horses within my budget and would be getting more horse for the crowns money than we would in the UK and Northern Europe. It would also allow us to feel assured in we were buying from the studs and had a full history of horses we would look to buy and possibly have a chance to view its Dam and Sire!
A final night in Budapest gave us an opportunity to view the stunning Parliament building and take in
the last gasp pf Hungarian Culture before heading back to England
to plan a Trip with our customers
in London to travel back with the relevant plans in place to buy the final horses to meets this year’s remount requirement.
  ANZAC
Day 2023
On ANZAC Day 2023, AWAMO President Nigel Allsopp had the pleasure of visiting the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) Troop contingent Cyprus. Thanks to Christopher Ham for making the visit possible.
The 1 Military Working Dog Regiment Commands the small Troop on the Island, one of just a couple of overseas postings for the Military Working Dog (MWD) handlers nowadays. The team is led by Captain
Ella Gale (1MWD-CypSqn-OC) who arranged Captain Lucy Gimson (1 MWD-105Sqn-1 TpComd) to organises the day. The Troop is a highly motivated unit with both newish and highly experienced members such as SSgt Steve Mulholland senior trainer who picked me up arranged security ID and kindly showed me around
the facilities. They are also kept extremely busy, and I appreciated their time.
The 25 April ANZAC Day
is a very important day to Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces. I have had
the pleasure in serving in
both forces over 25 years. I
was visiting Cyprus to visit
my wife’s family, so as a long serving dog handler it was an amazing experience for me to honour ANZAC soldiers not too far away across the sea from Gallipoli with a new generation of service men and women. I shall treasure the day forever.
