 LEE HO LEGACY
The late David Jayne was fortunate to be introduced to sailing at a young age. David’s lifelong passion resulted in the restoration of Y28 in Salcombe which he successfully raced in the beautiful South Devon Ria where gentle hills create wind shifts to challenge the most accomplished sailor.
Following David’s untimely death last
year his family and friends wanted his legacy to be one that introduced the next generation to the joys of sailing. Belinda Jayne kindly donated funds and David’s glass prize wear to the Cadet Regatta and an idea began to fill the sails. Celebrating the great boat building history in Salcombe, when in the 1850’s Salcombe was THE topsail Schooner Port. Building fine fast craft capable of bringing exotic fruits home to Britain. Crucially fast before the prize cargoes perished.
The SYC Cadet idea grew into the David Jayne Memorial Yawl Race.
Twenty-four cadets celebrated the end of the Cadet Regatta with a Yawl Treasure Hunt. Exotic fruit was to be found
around the course. Oranges, lemons, bananas and the prize pineapple. It was a competitive Race and as the wind grew in strength, so it became more challenging; but above all it was fun and a huge celebration of the sheer joy of catching the wind and working together. There is
a charm in sailing a classic boat whether historic or modern. Elements of design and history give a joy that elevates the experience to a higher plane. Thank you, David. Lee Ho!
