LADIES THAT LAUNCH
Sailing into our ninth year, the launching Ladies have found the perfect midweek time to enjoy the Estuary. Tuesday mornings attract a different group of new sailors each year to join the hardy core of regular launchers and what
is so exciting is that we give people the chance to cast off and sail.
Often people say to me they have wanted to try sailing for years but have never had the chance. At SYC this soon changes, as we encourage them to sail solo and then before they know it they too are captivated by the thrill of sailing.
Many thanks go to Roger Odell and Peter Sturgess who kindly help with these fun sessions and share their nautical knowledge. If more chaps also want to get afloat on a Tuesday we are sure the Estuary is big enough for us all.
The camaraderie found in rigging boats and sailing from Smalls Beach grows each year. Whilst the boats seem to get heavier, pulling them up and down the beach is better than any session in a gym. A day’s sailing awakens a number of different muscle groups which has to be good for our health and well-being and the short sharp races concentrate the mind and keep the competitive juices flowing - many of the Ladies even took early-season sail training in Greece!
With more Ladies racing in the Club Series, on form Solo Sailor Simon Dobson gave a fantastic workshop on keeping “on the Breeze” to improve our racing skills. The Chart Room lends itself perfectly to

such training sessions as the height above the estuary gives everyone an expert view of the tidelines and where to tack. There
is always so much to remember when on the water but next year watch out as the Ladies intend to concentrate on being afloat more and keeping on that breeze!
A highlight at the end of our season ended with 15 of us venturing to South Sands, in Toppers, Qubas, Visions, Lasers and a Yawl too. Sailing around the
Blackstone, close to the breaking waves on the Hipple, great fun was had by all and new friendships were born, we are already looking forward to next year.
So whether you are experienced or a complete beginner please do come and enjoy the fun, we’d love to have you join us. The new season will start in mid-April, so please watch out for updates on our Website.
