 SAILING COORDINATORS LOG
The reliable ebb and flow of the Yacht Club Calendar is our well- established schedule of the five main Race Series. With them come the Open meetings and Regatta weeks as well as new events which are added to the Calendar. In addition to the home fleets, Yawls, Solos and Twelves the Open Meetings now also include RS Aeros, RS 400s, Phantoms and Larks.
The calendar of events we run at SYC would not be possible without our Race Officers and their teams of helpers and
the Safety Boat drivers and crew. We do ask all active club members to volunteer and would like to thank you for helping
to make the events such a success by
your contributions. Anyone wishing to
sign up can do so using the duty man system which is accessed by logging
into the club website with your email and individual password. If you would like to get involved, please either sign up there or get in touch with the office. This year we have welcomed some new steadfast additions to the safety boat teams. Thank you to each and every one of you who “Do your Duties” with such commitment and good humour. A special note of thanks goes to Margaret Mackley and Gail Allen who have improved the smooth running of our Race Weeks and Open Meetings with their organisational prowess – thank you both.
Many of our safety boat crews have given positive feedback after driving our new Humber Ribs this year, which were
purchased thanks to the hard work of the Sailing and General Committees. So many people contributed to their arrival at the club – a big thank you to all. The boats are highly manoeuvrable and with the tubes slightly lower to the water, make recovering people over the side much easier – which is obviously a big plus. They also benefit from a clear deck area at the stern which helps for mark laying.
It was a delight to see so many new
RYA powerboaters gain their qualifications this year and as Malcolm Mackley has
so kindly shared his experience we urge more of you to take the opportunity to do courses or to turn up to our combined learning sessions. Next year we are also planning safety scenarios with Chris Winzar and the RNLI team. Thank you to Chris Stidson-Knot who gave us very valuable pre-season training. Our gratitude also goes to Spinlock who generously donated new deckvest lite lifejackets for our Safety Boat crews. Many of you have reported
the lifejackets are so comfortable you don’t realise you are wearing them – but please

don’t forget to, as wear them we must – as well as always using kill cords – yes even for the smallest of trips from the Safety Boat moorings to the Watch House steps – please be vigilant!
This year, Andy Savell stepped up to
be Rear Commodore Sailing and he has done a fantastic job of helping to steer our sailing programme. We work together with the Sailing Committee and after endless hours of behind the scenes planning,
the busy sailing program was launched. Together with Elizabeth, Andy has also skilfully simplified the prize giving challenge, ensuring the correct Regatta trophies for the right day are presented to the right people. As past years have shown, this is no mean feat and we are thankful for his input.
We are immensely grateful for the Harbour Master, Cameron Sims-Stirling,
