where we set off in pairs swimming through a scuttled patrol boat. This was a unique oppor- tunity for the Ocean Divers as none of them had previously dived to a wreck, and it allowed the Sport Divers to play about in and around the wreck. After lunch we went to a cave complex, where the two dive groups split up, with the Ocean Divers focusing on buddy-buddy rescue and the Sport Divers finishing off the necessary skills for their qualification, such as the delayed SMB.
On Friday, the Sports Diver cohort dived to the deepest depth of the week at 35 metres. This was in order for them to explore another wreck lying on the ocean floor. As they approached, the large vessel loomed in the distance and they had a precious few minutes investigating the wreck. The Ocean Divers, whilst not allowed to go deeper than 20 metres, still had the incredible chance of swimming above the wreck and saw a barracuda hunting. On returning to the sur- face we were greeted by a wall of jellyfish, which made it difficult to get out of the water without a sting or two. The drive back to the dive site gave us a chance to reflect on the day’s diving, but was soon interrupted on arrival when we car- ried out the routine of washing and hanging our kit out for the last time before leaving the next day. The expedition ended at 0005hrs on 23rd April 2017, with all nine OCdts gaining a BSAC qualification.
