Regular Officers in the British Army can usu- ally recall fond memories from significant milestones during their time at Sandhurst.
Ex Long Reach and Ex Dynamic Victory spring to mind, as well as memorable occasions dotted throughout the year, including Old College Sun- day and offers from Regiments and Corps. Sadly weeks one to five don’t necessarily fall into this category, for the simple fact is that the majority spend most of it half asleep.
Lack of sleep isn’t the only challenge faced by OCdts during their first five weeks at Sandhurst; all sorts of new information and expectations are thrown at them as soon as they arrive on Ironing

Board Sunday. Happily, 28 Platoon, Imjin Coy have recently emerged from the other side intact, and have put together the ultimate 10-point Sur- vival Guide to explain what got them through:
1. Bring the best iron that money can buy (but don’t use it on absolutely everything) – new Cadets arrive on a Sunday afternoon, saying goodbye to family and friends, then heav- ing luggage bags and ironing boards into Old College. And so the day is colloquially known as Ironing Board Sunday. Indeed, these irons and ironing boards are critically important; we were soon thrown into prepar- ing vast amounts of kit for room inspections, and in this way started developing personal discipline from an early stage. Teamwork was critical too; some members of the Pla- toon are naturally better than others at some tasks, and so we all mucked in to help each other out. Just don’t iron absolutely every- thing – we heard stories of Cadets who took a steaming hot iron to one of his brand-new fleeces, and as a result it will never look the same!
2. Become a drill ninja – drill was another activ- ity which engendered teamwork in the Pl early on. We had to work as a team and learn the drill moves as quickly as possible
