with early, face-mounted,
full-width sash boxes c.
1700 with much later, two-over-two slender sliding sashes from Mid-C19. And again at 24 West Street from c.1715 (Fig. 09) we find early sash boxes set-back from the building face with chunky period-style sashes inappropriately and unnecessarily stiffened with early-C20 very plain sash horns to create ‘Frankenstein’ frames which are not true to any one period. (Fig. 10.)
As the Town & Country Planning Act 1947 came into force, and the listing of significant buildings commenced, the conveyor-belt of change to keep up with fashion was all but stopped; effectively freezing the aesthetic of buildings at the time of listing to preserve Oundle’s historic townscape.
