History of the
MARKET PLACE
This map, which shows the ancient plan of central Oundle with the middle of the market place filled with small buildings, was reconstructed from the Austell Survey of 1565.
This lovely model of the marketplace we have on display was made especially for the Museum by Tony Hayward
and shows what it might have looked like before 1826 when the buildings in the middle were replaced by the present market building.
The under croft was open
to the elements and until the
building was sold to private businesses in the late 20th century, market stalls were sheltered there during trading.
