Lucas had a lifelong interest in dogs and bred Sealyham terriers for many years. In the late 1940s he successfully crossed one of his smaller dogs with a Norfolk terrier. The resulting litter proved to be both good domestic pets and admirable working dogs, which he described as ‘death to rats’. The Lucas terrier was born and the type is now a well-established breed with all dogs registered with the Lucas Terrier Club owing direct lineage to the original litter. Sir Jocelyn Lucas Bt MC died on 2nd May 1980.
