  The son of an officer in the Royal Dragoons, Vaughan Kent-Payne was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire, and trained at Sandhurst on SMC16. He retired from the army in 2013 after 36 years split between The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment. During this time, he served on operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, DR Congo and Iraq and on Defence Engagement tours of Kuwait, Nigeria, Palestine and Liberia. After leaving the army, he spent 18 months with the Royal British Legion, running the charity’s support of armed forces veterans in the Northwest. In April 2015, he became Director of The Sandhurst Trust, the official charity and alumni community of the Royal Military Academy. He is married to Dawn, a former Royal Artillery officer, and they have three children. Their eldest son designs mobile phone apps, their daughter is a tattoo artist, and their youngest son is an officer in the Army Air Corps.
