the Bank of Bermuda and, a few days later, police arrested the suspect, Buck Burrows and an associate, Larry Tacklyn, known criminals with affiliation to the Black Berets. Both men were sentenced to death for involvement in the five murders and hanged in December 1977, the last people to be executed under British law anywhere in the world.
Lady Sharples was created a life peer on 18th June 1973 as Baroness Sharples, of Chawton in the County of Hampshire. The Inland Revenue refused to accept that Sir Richard had been killed in the line of duty, and she was forced to sell her home to pay the death duties. Baroness Sharples retired from the House of Lords in December 2017 at the age of 94.
