Charles Mohammed Barwah was born on 13th April 1929 in Kumasi, Gold Coast – a British colony in West Africa. In 1947, he enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, Gold Coast Regiment, and by 1953 he had been promoted to sergeant. Under the gradual process of decolonisation to strengthen the army in preparation for independence, Barwah became the first native officer cadet from his country to be sent to the post-war Royal
