an approach from a prominent businessman, Davies became the managing director of Surf Snowdonia. Taking over a disused aluminium smelting plant in the Conwy Valley, he oversaw a £17m project to create the world’s first inland artificial surf centre. Utilising Spanish technology, the wave machine enables realistic surfing without the vagaries of the sea, and with high-quality catering only a few metres away. Such is the standard of the waves that Red Bull held the first international artificial surfing championship at the site.
Having delivered the project on time and under budget, Davies set up his own company in May 2016, The International Railway Heritage Consultancy, to advise on setting up and maintaining heritage railways and museums. His team of experts has managed projects in Argentina, Israel, Nigeria, the UK and Sierra Leone, including the production of a five-episode Channel 4 TV series fronted by Peter Snow. He maintains close relations with the army through his role as a trustee of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust. Steve Davies MBE is representative of the hundreds of former army officers who have forged successful careers in business.
