William, Prince of Wales 2006.
The eldest son of Charles and Diana, Prince and Princess of Wales, William Arthur Philip Louis was born in London on 21st June 1982. Educated at Eton College after a gap year, in which he travelled widely, he gained a degree in geography from the University of Saint Andrews. In January 2006, he entered Sandhurst as Officer Cadet Wales and was commissioned in December into the Blues and Royals before completing the Troop Leaders’ course at Bovington. However, his status as a future king meant that he could not be deployed on operations like his younger brother, Harry. Instead, William embarked on a programme of attachments to the armed forces, serving on HMS Iron Duke and learning to fly at RAF Cranwell.
In January 2009, he transferred his commission to the RAF and trained as a helicopter pilot. He was posted to RAF Valley in Anglesey as a Search and Rescue pilot. He also took his girlfriend, Catherine Middleton, who he had met at university – they were engaged in late 2010 and married the following April. William was created Duke of Cambridge at this time.
