Vernon Kell 1894.
The son of an army officer and a Polish émigré, Vernon George Waldegrave Kell was born in Great Yarmouth on 21st November 1873. Commissioned from Sandhurst on 10th October 1894 into the South Staffordshire Regiment, he was seconded to the intelligence staff in Tientsin (Tianjin) in January 1900. He fought in the Boxer Rebellion of that year as well as serving as the Daily Telegraph war correspondent. Already fluent in German, Italian, French and Polish, he added Mandarin and Russian
