Shunned by the Happy Valley set, Broughton returned to the UK and, a few days later, committed suicide with a morphine overdose in the Adelphi hotel, Liverpool. Diana remained in Kenya, marrying, firstly, an elderly landowner and inheriting a fortune when he died. She then married the 4th Baron Delamere, gaining a title and a further fortune on his death in 1979. At the time of her death in 1987, her power and influence gained her the nickname ‘The White Queen of Africa’.
