This was duly completed and the Police Headquarters, Magistrates Court and Health Centre, which now border the gardens, were built.
Many rumours of further compulsory purchase orders have surfaced
since but thankfully none have yet materialised other than a recent proposal for the installation of a huge mobile phone mast which whilst not taking any of the Association’s land, it was opposed on various grounds and the planning application rejected.
This Centenary year also sees the upcoming retirement of long-standing official Keith Harrison who in over 40 years of service has held every position within the Association. Having stepped aside as Chairman at the 2022 AGM
to be succeeded by current Chairman Peter Mather, Keith is still active
as Treasurer, Store Manager and a member of the board of Trustees but will also stand down from these posts at the end of the current year. Keith was also a prominent figure on the local show scene, having organised and
it is all about the future and seeing the site thrive
competed at the Chester-Le-Street and District show for many years until Covid restrictions put a temporary halt to proceedings.
Whilst Keith is soon to be calling time on his lengthy service in officialdom, for the Newcastle Bank Allotment Association and its members it is all about the future and seeing the site thrive for the next 100 years.
