Sheffield’s history of allotments is unique,
in that it is well-documented in a series of archival maps drawn by three generations of surveyors, who were plotting and surveying land in Sheffield for purposes of industrial development and manufacturing.
They documented the allotments simply to note where land could be dispensed with for development. Fortunately for writer Margaret Boulton, this gave a full picture of allotments in the area in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
