battalion took the opportunity to conduct adventurous training, battlefield stud- ies and enjoy the culture and history of Germany and wider Europe. Despite the considerable amount of work to deploy some 700 people to Germany and prepare the fleet for exercising, our time in Germany has given 5 RIFLES the opportunity to focus on warfighting and combined arms manoeuvre with our attachments from across the wider brigade. This testing training will put us in good stead for operations in Estonia next summer and beyond.
OPERATIONAL SHOOTING TEAM
The Bisley competition was once again the focus for our shooting team in 2023, and this year saw some of our best results. All members of the team were placed in the top 81 shots across the competition. Of particular note was Cpl Stanton who placed 2nd and LCpl Eggett who placed 9th in the individual rankings. As a team, we placed third overall, narrowly beaten by the two teams from the Royal Gurkha Rifles. This was an improvement on our 2022 performance and saw us continuing to close the gap on our rival teams. Looking forward to 2024, the team selection and training has commenced and planning for the Regimental Shooting Competition is underway. Training camps in Cyprus and the USA will further develop the team as we chase the gold medal at Bisley next year.
WORKFORCE
Having completed Op INTERFLEX and with Mission Ready Training and deploy- ment on Op CABRIT 14 as an Armoured Infantry Battle Group forthcoming, 5 RIFLES has transitioned back to its usual warfighting ORBAT. We have been
