Best Boxer Pte McGlough B Coy
Pte McGlough won his third consecutive fight in a row beating Pte Johnston (C Coy). Pte McGlough was also awarded best boxer for the evening, which was thoroughly deserved.
There were two heavyweight bouts in the second half, the first witnessed Cpl Groves (A Coy) beating Pte Graham (B Coy) and the second Heavyweight bout saw Cpl Clampitt outclassing Pte White (D Coy). The most anticipated bout of the evening was the final bout; a Super Heavyweight bout between LCpl Edwards (B Coy) and Cfn Whyte
(HQ Coy). Of note having previous cage fighting experience clearly has an advantage
BN Football
The 2015-2016 season started very well after great success at the Infantry six-a-side competition. Battalion Football remains very popular as a 2 MERCIAN core sport and initial training sessions would see between 30 to 40 players turning up to try show off their talent.
With many players away at various
times throughout the season I cannot remember when the same team was able to play consecutive games but we have still managed to compete with all the teams in the league.
After much frustration involved in getting teams to come to Chester and play us we decided to travel to them. By doing this
we managed to play eight out of our ten league games and finish fourth in the league which was a little disappointing. We then had the Army Sixes North in Catterick at the
Cpl Clampitt B Coy Red catching Pte White D Coy with a jab
as LCpl Edwards outclassed his opponent in the second round by TKO.
Every fighter gave 100%, no boxer
was found wanting on the night, they all delivered, dug deep and performed far beyond my expectations. At the end of
the evening B (Malta) Coy had proven themselves as great fighters and were victorious by winning 5 out of their 8 bouts (2016 Inter Company winners). HQ Coy and A Coy finished joint second.
Like every other unit these days, we
have had a busy 2016 but have invested considerable effort in developing our boxing credentials. For the remainder of this boxing
end of the season. The team embarked for Catterick with very little training but were quite optimistic that we could do well. After a couple of tense opening games the team settled down, eventually thrashing 21 Engrs 4:1 in the final.
We have taken a few positives from
our 6-a-side game; mainly the intensity
and fitness levels needed and will carry them forward to this season. At this point
I will mention SSgt Smith 2 MERCIAN RAPTC, he has revitalised the Battalion team and has made some very interesting decisions, like moving the Goalkeeper to centre forward. This has paid off with LCpl Paige scoring in every game since the move. The players now used to his crazy moustache have warmed to his enthusiasm in training sessions. SSgt Smith is now the administrator for Army North League, this

season 2 MERCIAN will now develop their new appointed Battalion Boxing Squad with a view to arranging sparring sessions with other Infantry units that are within easy reach of Dale Barracks. During lulls in pre deployment training the OIC Boxing will ensure we develop our coaches by getting more Level 1 and 2 qualifications. As OIC Boxing I am very confident that 2 MERCIAN will have a strong boxing squad come
the 2017-2018 Season, as long as we continually develop the talent we have now identified within this unit. Boxing will remain a core sport for 2 MERCIAN.

should help alleviate the problems we have had organising fixtures in the past.
With the new season under way and
our first game a victory over our local rivals 2 LANCS in a league and Cup double
the future looks bright for the team. We continue to welcome new players, a healthy competitive company football scene is absolutely key to this and something
2 MERCIAN will continue to build over the next few months. Sub Unit teams provide us with competitive training matches in the lull between league games and gives us
the opportunity to spot new talent on the football pitch.
