and the cards were produced in large numbers from about 1860. In 1870 the cost of sending a postcard, and also Christmas cards, dropped to half a penny and this meant even more people could send cards through the post.
We have a few examples of early 20th Century cards – sadly none from the Victorian period,
in the Museum collection. The ones shown date from the 1940’s.
One particularly pretty card shows a watercolour of some violets and includes
a quote from John Morton’s (1671?-1726) book from 1712, The Natural History of Northamptonshire.
