Carrot Competition
COLLETTE BISSON
Jersey is slowly starting to get back to some sort of normality, and although there are still restrictions in place, the Jersey Association has been able to find a way of running its annual fun carrot competition with the help of the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
The competition, which is again being sponsored by Marshall’s seeds and Sonnic Support Solutions, has attracted over 50 entrants, many of them children.
Participants were able to collect everything needed on April 25th, including
30 litre containers filled with compost and Chantenay Red Core 2 carrot seeds, at a drive through collection point at the Royal Jersey showground manned by committee members and Rachelle Robinson from the RJA and HS.
Although there was an opportunity to stop for advice, it was decided that a group demonstration would not be possible this year. Instead, a zoom presentation was organised to help with the sowing and tending of carrots and preparation for exhibition. A YouTube video has also been
posted on the Association’s Facebook page. Marshalls supplied all the seeds and have offered vouchers as prizes for which we are
very grateful for their continued sponsorship. Sonnic Support Solutions have sponsored the cost of the compost and the prize money for the funniest carrots
Judging will take place on Friday 20th August at the Royal Jersey Showground and will be part of the Society’s annual summer show which it is hoped will run in its normal format.
