Runner beans harvested regularly
and these can be planted any time. You can be preparing the ground for them now by forking it over, removing weeds and incorporating some manure or compost.
You may have apples and pears ready for harvesting and also autumn raspberries. I store my apples and pears in shallow trays in the shed so that I can keep checking to see that they are sound and no signs of rotting. Don’t store any that are damaged.
In the greenhouse you should have tomatoes and cucumbers for harvesting and possibly peppers and aubergines. If your tomato plants have reached the top of the greenhouse, pinch out the tops so that they won’t keep growing and producing fruit that won’t ripen. It is more important to ripen the fruits that are present. You still need to feed them once a week with tomato fertiliser which helps ripening. You can remove the shading from the greenhouse and start closing the

doors and ventilators in the evening.
In the vegetable garden, keep blanching
leeks and celery when needed as I described last month and bend the leaves over cauliflowers. If you are growing marrows, squashes and pumpkins put something under the fruits to keep them off the ground. Any suitable material will do but I use pieces of builder’s damp proof material like I use for blanching leeks. Another job is to cut down the leaves of asparagus.
You should have plenty of crops for harvesting now. The main crop potatoes should be ready. I wrote at length last month about harvesting the various crops so please refer to these notes. In September 2020 I took a lot of my spare produce to a food bank.
This is the month when most of the catalogues from the main seed suppliers drop through the letter box. Choosing seeds
Spare produce took to a food bank
is a job I look forward to every year. I first look at the seeds left from the previous season
to see if they are still usable and not too old then decide what I still need to order. Most seeds will keep a year or two if they are kept dry. One exception being parsnips which should be bought fresh every year. I keep
me seeds in a box in a cupboard. Some companies send out catalogues in spring as well, but I always order mine this month.
