and dogs. By this time, all E2 handler postings had ceased and, in line with the normalisation programme’s aim to establish a civilian security apparatus, the Northern Ireland Security Guard Service (NISGS) was expanding to take on more routine work which included the protection of the
remaining bases. Jobs for Army dogs were on the decline.
Post August 2007 – in the wake of the closure or the ADU NI in July 2007 – the NISGS had thirty-six Patrol dogs and one Vehicle Search dog.32
The table below demonstrates the value of the dogs employed by ADU.

The Travelling Dog Inspectorate
The Travelling Dog Inspectorate (TDI) – later renamed Chief Trainer – was accountable for the training standards of all dog teams and licensing of all Province handlers as well as those of the Ulster
Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Regiment. It was the responsibility of the TDI to complete an assurance visit to each site and evaluate handlers twice a year. All corrective action was in the hands of the four RAVC Sgts nearest to the
