  Description of Capability
   1.
 Protection (Prot) Dog
Protection MWDs (also referred to as Patrol) are air scenting MWDs with the capability to detect, chase and hold an intruder. They can be deployed in the defence of critical assets, providing commanders with a high profile visible deterrent. Employed as a patrolling or static sentry they improve the security of the installation being guarded. There are 2 classifications of Protection MWD: The more aggressive Patrol dog that will, on command, chase and apprehend an intruder by any part of the body. The second type is the Patrol Arm True, more controlled it will apprehend by holding the arm in preference. Both types will protect the handler without command and may be dual handled.
 2.
  High Assurance Search Dog (HAS(D))
The High Assurance Search Dog will search for commercial explosives and component parts. (HAS(D) only operates with a Royal Engineer Advanced Search Team. It provides a ‘stand off ’ detect capability; these search dogs works slowly providing a high assurance search. The dogs can be employed on routes, compounds and buildings, open areas and Defensive searches as a visible deterrent.
 3.
Improvised Explosive Device Detection Dog (IE3D)
The Improvised Explosive Device Detection Dog provides a ‘stand off ’ IED detect capability. The dog is able to detect and indicate the location of IEDs, immediately ahead of both Mounted and Dismounted Close Combat patrols. The dogs supplement rather than replace current IED DETECT capabil-
ities, increasing the level of assurance. They do not indicate the presence of weapons or ammunition.
   4.
  Vehicle Search (VS) Dog
Capable of searching all forms of vehicles, VS will detect and passively indicate the presence of explosives, firearms, ammunition and associated paraphernalia. It provides a compact and versatile aid to searching all types of vehicles. VS increase the volume of vehicles searched through any check point and provide a high profile deterrent to En Forces. VS can search vehicles from bicycles to aircraft and ships; they can be deployed at MEPs, VCPs, Snap VCPs, Eagle VCPs and Dolphin VCPs.
   5.
Arms and Explosive Search (AES) Dog
AES MWDs are trained to indicate the presence of arms, ammunition, explosives and associated materials. They do not differentiate between
arms and explosives. AES can search in urban and rural areas, buildings, compounds (occupied, unoccupied, derelict), vehicles (cars, lorries, trains, ships, containers and aircraft), open areas, routes, roads and railways. AES can assist in VCPs, ICPs, HLS and clear cordon positions. They are a speedy and reliable means of search, providing the commander with an additional level of assurance during routine patrolling or deliberate strike ops.
