multiple types of terrain including urban, jungle and barren areas such as disused quarries.
Lessons are delivered to students in the use of both MWD capabilities by either the SNCO or by the LCpl, a practical demonstration is also delivered. This enables the students to have a greater understanding of the capability at their disposal, how to task it and how their troops can best utilise it to full effect.
Also in 2021, Sgt Jodie Lewis RAVC became the first female British Soldier to complete the Jungle Warfare Instructors Course. Sgt Lewis is now serving as the SNCO IC of the RAVC Dog Section – the RAVC lead instructor on all MWD aspects in the jungle environment in addition to teaching other military skills at the Jungle Warfare Division.

The RAVC’s inspired idea and huge enthusiasm for reviving the concept of using IP and Tracker
dogs within a jungle training environment in 1989 was a turning point for the Corps and the British Army. The success of the project, the skill and dedication of the men and the dogs impressed sceptics, gained new champions and established lifesaving potential.
Maybe, for history’s sake this chapter is best signed off with the words of someone who witnessed and supported the Corps’ mission to re-establish the dog and soldier partnership once more in jungle green. DAVRS, Brigadier Paul GH Jepson, speaking after the first jungle warfare trial: “Their performance in the Brunei trial has exceeded even our expectations and credit must be given to the talented and dedicated RAVC soldiers to whom we entrusted this important task.”
