Snow Eagle
By SAC Stu Hardy, 1 ISR Sqn
In January, 4 people from 1 ISR Sqn participated in Ex SNOW EAGLE in Bavaria, Germany.
The exercise consisted of 5 days ski training at the end of which each person would gain a skiing qualification. They completed SF1 (Basic Winter Resilience Training), for those with limited to no skiing experience and SF 2 (Winter Resilience Training), for those who have completed SF1 previously.
All participants benefitted greatly from the experience with 2 learning to ski for the first time and the other 2 being able to improve their skills for future skiing expeds and possible ski leader qualifications.
Vixen Eagle
By Flt Lt James Jackson, 1 ISR Sqn
Nordic skiing (or cross-country skiing) often gets a bad reputation owing to the physical exertion involved. However, Exercise VIXEN EAGLE gives you the opportunity to try it for a week in Bavaria for the sizeable contribution of €30. Despite a lack of snow and icy conditions, attempting to master the ‘classic technique’ (imagine trying to run like an orangutan with swinging arms) with around 60 other novices was an enjoyable and often hilarious experience.
Gentle declines would topple an entire team on the first day but by the end of the week we were gritting our teeth, clinging on for dear life and ploughing our way down the hills, with adequate café stops along the way.
Chalets were of a good standard and the local area offers a decent array of restaurants, quiet bars and a naturist spa if that is your thing. An interesting sport and certainly better than a week on a MODNET terminal; get yourself on VIXEN EAGLE next year.
