                                  ARMY SKELETON CHAMPIONSHIPS
Corporal Steven Power from 1 MERCIAN was shown to demonstrate the true spirit
of the Skeleton at the Army Championships in France during the winter on 2014, as he won the award for demonstrating the true spirit of the sport on his first time competing in what is regarded as one of the most difficult courses in the world.
Corporal Power had previously attended a novice camp four years ago when trialling the sport, during which he managed to achieve the fastest lap times and highest speed recorded for a novice! He was invited back, but sustained an injury during training which almost spelled the end of his military career.
After spending an intense period of rehab, including two operations, he fought his way back to fitness and eventually attended the competition this year, earning the award for showing ‘the True Spirit of the Competition.’
Corporal Steven Power said: “Skeleton is the most amazing thing I’ve done in my career, it’s the rush, you just get such a huge adrenaline rush. I had to go back.”
Mercian Soldiers Scale Walls Of Ice In Canada
1 MERCIAN soldiers spent their final month in Canada ice climbing on the Columbia Icefield; the largest ice field in the Rocky Mountains of North America.
Troops spent the time learning crevasse rescue skills and the techniques of ice climbing, while taking in the surroundings of one of the most stunning and breathtaking glaciers in the world.
Titled Exercise WAPTA DANCE, the adventure training was designed to put soldiers out of their comfort zones and expose them to challenges that they would not normally face in a military scenario. It helps build courage, self-discipline, team skills and fitness outside of a typical military environment.
Corporal Roberts from Ellesmere Port said: “The views were amazing. I pushed myself forward to go, as I knew it would be incredible. It was one of the best things I‘ve done in the Army!”
