On the command, off they went with the Scottish team’s snail racing ahead to finishing first, however there was some discussion as to the legality of the “fishing rod” with bait on the hook used by the Scots, but in the end, it was declared legal. The English snails never made it out of the starting blocks and about the only things that one of them did

We also thank the Westland Group (Marshalls and Unwins) and Southern Trident (a new sponsor to the NVS) for their attendance at the Championships and I know from conversations that I had with the staff on the stands that their presence was of great benefit to them both. I would also like to thank Jason Ralph-Smith of AutoPot for his generous donation of his

this is the first year that all of our major sponsors were listed in the NVS National Championships Schedule, which is no more than they all deserve considering the support that they give us.
Sunday late afternoon saw the breakdown take place, the benches were cleared, black cloth removed, tables collapsed and stacked and everything else cleared away. It was as if we were never there. The whole experience was great, and a big thanks goes to all those who helped to organise, setup, breakdown,
judge, steward, exhibit and most of all to SEAS for hosting the Championships. Thanks especially go to our organising committee of Keith Hine, Chris Spree and Diana Spree, without whose help I could not have coordinated the organisation of the event. Whether I will be involved in five years’ time, who knows, but from the feedback received from everyone, I believe that it was a great success. Well Done All, and over to you, the Scottish Branch for 2025 in Ayr.

 Strulch – introduce the benefits
of mulching to your plot!
My husband Geoff invented Strulch at Leeds University.
We have been selling it since 2005 and it has grown in popularity because it is a quality organic product with a neutral pH that works on all soil types. It can be used anywhere in the garden including vegetables plots. Strulch works by blocking light which is needed for germination and the texture of Strulch together with added minerals deters slugs and snails.
Add to bare soil to stop weed germination and around plants when they reach a good size. We sell in 12, 25, 40 or 48 x 13.5 kg bags, and you can buy our 9 kg bags from our stockists.
Find out about Strulch on our website – www.strulch.co.uk or give me a call (01943 863610).
Happy cultivating. Jackie Whiteley.
