3 MERCIAN WELFARE by CSgt Sharples.
The world of welfare has seen an extremely busy, exciting and enjoyable year and when we look at the last 12 months there has been an awful lot achieved from
social events to critical information briefs. Personnel have also changed throughout the year with Captain Mick ‘I’ll test all of the cakes’ Whillock now moving on to become the new MTO, vacating the UWO post that Capt Dave Travis has easily settled into very well with his flamboyant, cheeky style.
Everyone within the 3 MERCIAN family have shown that working together we can overcome those testing periods, whether it be for prolonged periods of separation due to Pre-deployment training, Herrick 19, life’s adversities or the completely unexpected. What has been instrumental in assisting with taking away these pressures is by taking every chance to have some fun and enjoy ourselves. The wives’ committee ‘The Ball and Chain Gang’ have worked wonders and have assisted in the planning and execution of most of the events through the year such as:
Mercian Prefects
Taste of Fiji
Back to School Night Halloween
Children’s Christmas Parties Big Fat Gypsy Wedding The Big Toddle
St Georges Day / BBQ Caribbean Night Festival of Food
Car Boot Sales
Sports Days
Various Trips
Bingo & Quiz Nights
Now, I could write lots about each event
as they were all special to someone and added that little bit of brightness but I think most notable for me, was the Christmas Wives’ function ‘The Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ as all of the hard work paid off. When you get comments on our Regimental Welfare Facebook page such as “The best Christmas Party ever” “What a fantastic night, I didn’t want to leave”, it makes it that much special, and what a night it was. I must say that particular thanks must go to Mrs Alex Johnson for the great idea and for

all of her hard work in organising and setting up such a wonderful night.
As always, we want the best for our families and we are always striving to improve in every area to make that time in Germany more memorable. Recently we are encouraging more families to make use of the new stores we now hold within 3 MERCIAN welfare, such as Mountain Bikes, Archery Equipment, Squash and Racketball equipment. I feel our families’ sports afternoons are going to be a huge success. We have undoubtedly come a long way, together.
2013 to 2014 is going to be a big year
for all involved within 3 MERCIAN as we move forward in our new roles and locations including Op Herrick 19. But in true Mercian spirit we will deal with whatever is thrown
at us and stand together, unite, become stronger, remembering one thing, all of us within the welfare department are here to help.
