Appointment of Master General Army Medical Services
With the demise of the individual Arms and Services Directorates, the Army has established a number of Master Generals to focus on the governance of their Corps and Regiments as a key element of its operational effectiveness. Masters General can be either retired officers or, as a secondary role, serving officers.
The disestablishment of the Army Medical Directorate, and with it the post of Director General of the Army Medical Service (DGAMS), necessitates the appointment of an individual who acts as the focus for all four Corps of the Army Medical Service and who can represent them at the highest levels within the Army. There is no change to the roles of the Corps Colonel, Heads of Corps or of the Colonels
Commandant of the individual Corps, nor is the post within the Army chain of command. It is also important to note that this is neither a paid nor a full time post.
Lt Gen Louis Lillywhite CBE MBE was appointed as Master General Army Medical Services in January 2017. Gen Lillywhite’s military career started as a medical cadet in 1968, attached to 144 Parachute Field Ambulance (V), and finished as Surgeon General of the UK Armed Forces. His early years were spent with Airborne Forces, as Regimental Medical Officer 3 PARA and in various appointments with 23 Parachute Field Ambulance. These included a number of operational tours in Northern Ireland. A graduate of the Army Staff College, he served on the staff in the Army, MOD and NATO.
He was Commander Medical 1 (UK) Armoured Division during the first Gulf War. His senior appointments included Director-General Army Medical Service, Director-General Medical Operational Capability and Surgeon-General.
Gen Lillywhite plans to re-acquaint myself with the Army Medical Services and to develop the scope of the appointment over the coming months. He wishes to undertake a programme of visits to both regular and reserve units and attend some selected individual Corps events where he hopes to meet as many serving and retired members as possible. Gen Lillywhite has been updated by the Chief Nursing Officer (Army) and Colonels Commandant on specific issues affecting the Corps.
