Beaumaris Allotments certainly hit the jackpot on Thursday 11th April with the arrival of a film crew from BBC Gardeners’ World. Beaumaris Allotments Society Chairman, Andrew Dixon, said: “Every gardener would want their garden to be featured on Gardeners’ World, so for Beaumaris Allotments to be chosen to appear is a great achievement”.
The film crew arrived on a beautiful sunny day and were totally stunned
by the location of the allotments and
of Beaumaris itself. They spent the afternoon looking at the site and meeting some of the plotholders who had been chosen to be interviewed about their particular interests. They were impressed by the high standard of the site as, despite it being very early in the season, plotholders had worked hard to get their plots looking their best for the filming.
Thanks to the assistance of Beaumaris
Lifeboat, the crew were able to film at the Lifeboat Station due to the view from the allotments being affected by the adjacent car park being full of building materials.
Friday was thankfully another beautifully sunny day and filming began early outside the Lifeboat Station. Frances has recently taken on a plot of her own in Kent and was particularly keen to learn about the use of seaweed. One of the plotholders, Dr Ian Thorpe, was therefore filmed explaining not only the benefits of using seaweed but also all the restrictions for collecting it. After taking many shots of the superb view from the Lifeboat Station, the film crew moved back to the allotments and then interviewed Ian on his plot.
Next to be interviewed was Keevan Anker on his vineyard. Frances really wants to grow vines to make wine so was very interested to get as much information as possible. “Frances
Frances really enjoyed getting some hands-on experience and especially the pruning and training of the vines

From there the crew moved on to Chrissy Newsham’s plot to learn how she manages the problem of wind damage from the prevailing south- westerly winds. Chrissy was able to show the various methods she uses to minimise damage to her crops.
The crew filmed many of the plotholders working on their plots and finished the day with a wine tasting when some plotholders joined Frances to try some of Keevan’s wine.
The plotholders were delighted with the final programme which was shown on 17th May, and have had many visitors to the site as a result.
