Each year goes by quicker than the last –
age catches up with us I guess! 2024 was
an exceptionally busy year for the Regiment
with Battlefield trips, Remembrance and
Funerals.
The 80th Anniversary of D-Day was
especially poignant for the Regiment and on
the 6th June, members visited Asnelles to pay
their respects. The battlefield trip at the end
of June was a remarkable feat of organisation
by Steve Keane and Ken Chivers, with
historical content from Geoff Nicholls. Our
grateful thanks go to Steve and Ken for an
emotional yet fun trip, every day packed with
memories.
Remembrance pays such a massive part
of the Regiment’s history and this year was
no exception, with more members attending
the Field of Remembrance and Cenotaph
Parade. Many of our members raise funds
EDITORIAL
for the Poppy Appeal and Exeter branch
certainly excelled themselves by spending
two weeks in Morrisons, Exeter, Tesco
Exeter and Heavitree raising in the region
of £38,500. They were duly recognised by
the RBL with the Devon County Poppy Shield
presented at the County Conference.
Too many of the Regiment have died this
year, young and old, but at every opportunity,
the standard bearers have paid their
respects, irrespective of distance. They give
up their time to honour past members and
we are just so grateful to them.
Next year we say goodbye to Babs who
has been a stalwart in the office, assisting all
Regimental Secretaries over the years. We
will be so sorry to lose her and her expertise
and support of the Regiment.
Our new website www.
devonshireanddorsetregimentalassociation.
co.uk is up and running and managed by
Shane Neill – thank you Shane. Photos and
editorials always needed – please send them
through.
I would like to thank Tony Cox for his
support, I can ask him the most mundane
question about the Regiment and he will
always have an answer. This also gives me
an opportunity to thank the Trustees for their
guidance and especially the Chairman, Brig
Simon Young.
2025 will, I am sure, be as equally busy
with our branches and the new groups
which have surfaced – Golfing, Fishing and
Bikers. The Regiment goes from strength to
strength.
