in and around Oundle
Local amateur drama group Barnwell Entertainers are pleased to announce that their next production is the hilarious comedy ‘A Bunch of Amateurs’ written by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman.
A washed-up Hollywood star, Jefferson Steele, is unexpectedly flown to England to play the iconic role of King Lear at what he believes will be the legendary Royal Shakespeare Theatre
in Stratford-upon-Avon – the birthplace of Shakespeare. Instead of the grand RST, Jefferson finds himself signed with the ‘Stratford Players’ in the quaint Suffolk village of Stratford St John. And instead of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from developers.
The local villagers, a motley crew of amateur actors, are thrilled to have Jefferson joining their ranks. Jefferson, a typically selfish American with little regard for manners, initially considers himself too big for this humble setting. Jefferson’s monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians. As acting worlds collide and Jefferson’s career implodes, he discovers some truths about himself – along
with his inner Lear! The choice of play presents some production challenges for the group, but rehearsals are progressing well, and some new faces will be on show.
The performance hits the stage at Barnwell Village Hall between Wednesday 27th – Friday 29th November, with tickets priced at £10. For more details, please visit www.barnwellentertainers.com

Fancy trying a game of bowls... then come along!
Oundle Bowling Club welcomes anyone interested in trying the sport of bowls. Coaching and equipment, including the use of a specialised wheelchair and bowling aids for those with limited mobility, is available. All bowlers must wear flat soled footwear. We also have sets of junior bowls for younger children.
The outdoor bowls season runs for five months from the beginning May to the end of
September. Once that season is over, we open the clubhouse for our Short Mat season. This sociable sport is played on a special 45’ carpet during the months of October to April on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 2pm. We also run evening sessions.
Our clubhouse is also available to hire at very reasonable rates. We are located between the tennis and rugby club in Occupation Road.
