HERITAGE RAILWAY
Nene Valley
The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) is a standard gauge heritage railway running for 7.5 miles between Peterborough and Yarwell. The
line follows the route of the old London and North Western Railway branch line between Northampton and Peterborough.
Since its establishment in 1978 the railway
has been dedicated to preserving Britain’s rich railway heritage and providing memorable experiences for families, enthusiasts, and
visitors of all ages. The purpose of the
NVR is to contribute to the cultural life of
the Peterborough area by promoting an understanding, and appreciation of railways. The NVR is run by a team of 11 core paid staff supported by a workforce of over 350 volunteers. With over 30,000 visitors a year, an education programme hosting over 2,000 schoolchildren, and a membership of over 900, the NVR plays an important role in stimulating an interest in, and understanding of, our railway heritage.
The railway is a working museum and is home to the world-famous steam engine ‘Thomas’, who worked at the British Sugar factory in Peterborough before being sold to
the society and subsequently named by author Reverend W. Awdry.
But the Nene Valley Railway isn’t just a collection of tracks and locomotives; it’s a living, breathing testament to our shared heritage.
It’s where memories are made, stories are told, and history comes alive. From families seeking a nostalgic journey to enthusiasts admiring vintage engines, Nene Valley Railway holds a special place in the hearts of many.
Funding from this appeal with be put towards the following organisational priorities:
• Operating Costs - From coal to staffing,
the costs of running a heritage railway are substantial and are increasing rapidly. Funding will help cover these operational expenses and keep the wheels turning.
• Maintenance and Restoration - Funds will
be allocated to essential maintenance tasks and restoration projects, ensuring that our locomotives and infrastructure remain in top condition.
